The South Downs
on Two Wheels

The South Downs Way is one of England's great long-distance cycling routes — 160 kilometres from Winchester to Eastbourne following the chalk ridge of the South Downs. The final section, above the Seven Sisters, is the most dramatic: the path runs close to the cliff edge with unobstructed Channel views before descending to the Cuckmere Valley and the National Nature Reserve.

Guided cycling tours cover the highlights of this section in a half or full day, with e-bikes available for those who want to take on the climbs without suffering. E-bikes are strongly recommended for the Seven Sisters terrain — the South Downs hills are significant, and the combination of distance and ascent on a standard bike requires a high level of fitness that makes e-bikes the better choice for most visitors.

Routes are adapted to the group: beginners take the flat Cuckmere Valley floor route (12km return, gentle) while experienced cyclists tackle the full ridge from Eastbourne to Seaford via the cliff-top path (25km with significant climbing). Both offer extraordinary scenery throughout.

The Experience

Routes & What
You'll Ride

The Ridge Route: South Downs Way

Starting from Eastbourne or Seaford, the ridge route climbs onto the South Downs Way and follows the chalk escarpment with Seven Sisters views throughout. The path runs close to the cliff edge for several kilometres before descending to Cuckmere Haven and the National Nature Reserve. The views from the ridge are outstanding in both directions — the Channel to the south, the rolling Downs to the north.

The Valley Route: Cuckmere Haven

The Cuckmere Valley floor route is flat and spectacular, running beside the meandering Cuckmere river through nature reserve land to the shingle beach and cliff base. This is the route that offers the iconic Seven Sisters photograph — all seven peaks reflected in the river meanders. It's accessible to any cyclist and is particularly stunning in morning light.

E-Bikes: The Right Choice

The South Downs hills are significant. The climb from Cuckmere Haven to the cliff top gains 140 metres in under a kilometre — steep enough to make most visitors regret a standard bike. E-bikes transform this: the motor assists on climbs so you arrive at each viewpoint ready to look around rather than gasping for breath. Battery range is 60–80km, well beyond any tour distance.

The finest cycling route on the South Coast. E-bikes available — no excuses.

Common Questions

Cycling Tour FAQ

Are e-bikes available?
Yes. Most operators offer fully charged e-bikes with 60–80km range. E-bikes are strongly recommended for the Seven Sisters terrain — the South Downs hills are significant on a standard bike. Helmets are included with all bikes.
What routes are covered?
The cliff-top South Downs Way route (25km hilly, ridge views throughout) and the Cuckmere Valley floor route (12km flat, river and cliff reflections) are the main options. Guides adapt to group ability on the day.
What fitness level is needed?
For e-bike tours, most fitness levels are suitable. For standard bikes, a moderate cycling fitness is needed — able to cycle 25–40km with hills. The valley floor route is flat and suitable for casual cyclists on standard bikes.
When is the best time of year?
April to October. Spring offers firm paths and wildflowers. Autumn is beautiful with Cuckmere Valley colours. Avoid cycling on chalk paths after heavy rain — they become slippery and rutted when wet.
Do I need to bring my own bike?
No — bikes and helmets are included. If you prefer to bring your own, most operators accommodate this with a reduced hire cost. Check the specific operator listing on GetYourGuide.
Can I book a private cycling tour?
Yes. Most operators offer private bookings for groups, families, and corporate events. Private tours allow full flexibility on route, pace, and start time. Filter by "private" on GetYourGuide or contact the operator after booking.
