From Brighton: The Coastal Route
Brighton departures typically leave from Brighton Station or the seafront around 9am, heading east along the A259 coastal road through Seaford and Eastbourne to reach the Seven Sisters Country Park at Exceat. The journey takes 45–55 minutes depending on traffic. Groups are small — often just 8–12 people in a minibus — and the guide begins commentary as soon as you leave the city, pointing out the South Downs escarpment rising to the north and the changing character of the coast.
The day covers the key Seven Sisters sites: the Cuckmere Haven meanders and beach, the cliff-top ridge walk, Birling Gap, and for those with energy, a stretch towards Eastbourne. Lunch is typically at the National Trust café at Birling Gap or at a nearby pub. The return journey leaves around 4–5pm for an early evening arrival back in Brighton.
From London: The Full Day Out
London day trips depart Victoria Coach Station or Victoria Street around 8–8:30am and arrive at the Seven Sisters approximately 2.5 hours later. The programme is structured around maximising time at the cliff locations — typically 6–7 hours on the South Downs and coast before the return journey around 5–6pm. Some London operators combine Seven Sisters with Brighton, allowing passengers to explore Brighton seafront for 90 minutes before or after the cliff section.
London tours are the ideal option for visitors staying in the capital who want to experience Britain's finest chalk coastline without the complexity of rail connections and rural buses. The guide handles navigation, tides, and cliff-safety briefings — you arrive and follow.
Getting There Independently
If you prefer to travel independently, the best options are: Train from London Victoria to Seaford (1h 20m, change at Lewes), then a 20-minute taxi to Cuckmere Haven; or Train to Eastbourne (1h 30m direct), then Stagecoach bus 12A to Birling Gap or Exceat (30 min). The 12X Stagecoach coach runs directly from Brighton Pool Valley to Exceat in 55–60 minutes. None of these routes require a car.
