Weekday Trains to Eastbourne Cut Off-Peak

For about four weeks from 14 September, there is no direct midday train between London Victoria and Eastbourne on weekdays. Here is what it means if Eastbourne is your route in to Seven Sisters.

If you are planning a weekday day trip to Seven Sisters via Eastbourne, check your journey before you set out. Since Monday 14 September 2026, Southern has made temporary changes to weekday off-peak services between London Victoria, Haywards Heath, Lewes, Eastbourne and Ore, and the change runs for roughly four weeks.

!

What changes, and when

Monday to Friday, the normal half-hourly London Victoria-Eastbourne/Ore service runs as usual until around 09:00. Between 09:00 and 16:00, there is no direct through train: instead a shuttle runs between Eastbourne and Haywards Heath, and passengers change there to continue their journey. Normal two-trains-an-hour service resumes from around 16:24. Weekend services are unaffected. National Rail's disruption notice, last updated the morning of 19 September, says the change is expected to last approximately four weeks from 14 September.

Why It Is Happening

National Rail attributes the restriction to track conditions: the record-breaking hot, dry weather over the summer affected sections of the railway in Sussex, and a number of precautionary speed restrictions remain in place between Haywards Heath, Lewes, Eastbourne and Ore while Network Rail monitors conditions and carries out maintenance. Rather than run a slower direct service all day, Southern's parent group has chosen to withdraw the direct midday train and run a shuttle instead, saying the targeted change at quieter times helps services run more reliably.

What This Means If Eastbourne Is Your Gateway Town

Eastbourne is the finishing point for the full Seaford-to-Eastbourne traverse and a common start point for the Beachy Head end of the walk, so a midday train from London is exactly the kind of journey a day visitor would normally book:

  • Travelling from London Victoria on a weekday between about 09:00 and 16:00 — there is no direct train. Change at Haywards Heath, or use Southeastern via London Bridge instead, or travel on the Southern service as far as Haywards Heath (Southern says this leg is at no extra cost) and pick up the connecting service from there.
  • Travelling before 09:00 or after about 16:24, or at any time on a weekend — the normal direct service runs, so an early or late departure avoids the disruption entirely.
  • No change has been reported to Seaford-bound trains or to the coast bus routes. The 12/12X and seasonal 13X Coaster buses run the coast road between Brighton, Seaford, Exceat and Eastbourne and do not use this stretch of railway, so they are unaffected either way. See our getting there page for the full route breakdown.

If you were planning to travel from London via the direct route described in our Seven Sisters by train from London guide, build the change at Haywards Heath into your timing for the next few weeks, or aim for an early departure. Routing via Brighton, as covered in our day trip from Brighton guide, sidesteps the affected Eastbourne shuttle altogether if Seaford or Exceat is your intended start point.

Check Before You Travel

This is a temporary, time-limited change rather than a permanent timetable revision, and National Rail says it will keep reviewing conditions. Before you set out, check National Rail's live disruption page and Southern's service updates for the current picture.

Planning the walk itself?

Four routes run along these cliffs and they are not interchangeable — a flat 3km riverside stroll, the classic 6.5km Exceat to Birling Gap crossing, a short Birling Gap loop, and the full 21.9km Seaford to Eastbourne ridge. Compare distance, ascent and difficulty before you pick one.
