Stay or day trip?

Plenty of people drive down from London or Brighton on the day, walk the cliffs, grab a coffee at Birling Gap and call it done. Nothing wrong with that. But if you want to see the Sisters at their absolute best — early morning light on the chalk, a weekday when the path has maybe twenty people on it, or the golden hour that photographers queue up for — you need to sleep somewhere nearby.

The honest answer is that there's no accommodation directly on the cliffs. The nearest places to stay are Eastbourne (12–15 minutes drive east) or Seaford (10 minutes west). Alfriston, a genuinely lovely medieval village 5km inland, is often overlooked but places you within easy reach of the quieter western approach. Brighton works if you're combining the coast with a city break, though the 35–40 minute drive each way starts to eat into your day.

Below we've broken down the main areas honestly — price ranges, what you're actually getting, and when each makes most sense.

Where to Base Yourself

Eastbourne

12–15 min drive · Most choice

Best overall base

Eastbourne is the most practical base — widest selection of hotels, a proper town with good restaurants, and direct trains from London Victoria. It's not as pretty as Alfriston but it's convenient, and you'll never struggle to find somewhere to eat after a long day's walking.

Grand Hotel Eastbourne £130–280/night
Cavendish Hotel £90–160/night
Premier Inn / Travelodge £60–100/night
Seafront B&Bs £70–120/night

Seaford

10 min drive · Quiet & affordable

Best for walkers

Seaford is where walkers who mean business tend to stay. Smaller, quieter, and cheaper than Eastbourne, it's perfect for an early start — you can walk directly up onto Seaford Head and join the Seven Sisters path within minutes of leaving your front door. Fewer restaurant options, but the Wellington is solid.

Wellington Hotel £75–130/night
Local B&Bs £60–95/night
Self-catering / Airbnb £80–150/night

Alfriston Village

5 km inland · Most atmospheric

Hidden gem

Alfriston is the one people remember most. A proper Sussex flint village with a 14th-century church, half-timbered pubs, and a river running through it. The Star Inn has been hosting travellers since 1345. It's 5km inland but connects directly to the South Downs Way — you can walk to the cliffs without touching a road.

The Star Inn Alfriston £120–200/night
Deans Place Hotel £100–180/night
Village B&Bs £80–120/night

Brighton

35–40 min drive · City + coast

Best for city breaks

If you're combining Seven Sisters with Brighton's Lanes, restaurants, or nightlife, staying in Brighton can make sense. Just be honest with yourself about the drive: 35–40 minutes each way on a sunny bank holiday weekend is closer to an hour, and you'll need to sort parking at both ends.

Boutique hotels (Lanes) £100–250/night
Chain hotels (seafront) £75–140/night
B&Bs / guesthouses £65–110/night

Camping & Glamping

No camping on NT land — but there are excellent sites nearby

Important: Camping is not permitted anywhere on National Trust land at Seven Sisters. This includes the clifftops, Birling Gap, and Cuckmere Haven. Wild camping results in fines and a conversation you'd rather not have with a ranger. Use the designated sites below.

Alfriston Camping Park

A proper campsite in a great location — 5km inland from the cliffs along the Cuckmere valley. Quiet, well-maintained, and popular with South Downs Way walkers. Book weeks ahead for summer weekends.

📍 Star Road, Alfriston BN26 5TT
💷 £20–32 per pitch/night

Bay View Park

Larger holiday park at Pevensey Bay, 12km east near Eastbourne. Mix of static caravans, touring pitches and camping pods. Good facilities including a pool. Better suited to families than hardcore walkers.

Glamping Options

Several glamping sites have appeared in the South Downs in recent years — shepherd's huts, bell tents and treehouses within 20–30 minutes of the cliffs. Search Canopy & Stars or Pitchup for current availability.

When & How to Book

Bank holidays & summer weekends

If your dates fall on a bank holiday or summer weekend (mid-June through late August), book at least 2–3 months ahead. Eastbourne fills up surprisingly fast. Alfriston tends to book out even earlier because it has fewer rooms in total.

Mid-week is a different world

Genuinely. Tuesday to Thursday in September or October, you'll find better prices, empty car parks, and the cliffs mostly to yourself. If you can flex your dates even by a day or two, you'll notice the difference immediately.

Free cancellation pays off

Sussex weather is what it is. Book refundable rates where possible. The difference between a flexible and non-refundable rate is usually under £15 a night and worth every penny if you're walking-dependent.

Ask about parking before you book

Several Eastbourne seafront hotels charge separately for parking (£8–15 per night), which isn't always obvious at booking. If you're driving, factor this in or choose somewhere with included parking.
