Seven Sisters Picnic Spots: Best Locations & Weather Shelter Guide

10 min read

Seven Sisters = picnic paradise. Spectacular views, fresh coastal air, endless grass to spread out on. But it requires planning—wind is serious, weather changes fast, and there are no shops on the cliffs. We've picnicked here many times, learning which spots offer shelter, which have best views, what to bring to make it work.

The key is matching location to your needs. Cuckmere Haven beach perfect for families (space, beach activities). Haven Brow summit spectacular for views but windiest spot on earth. Exceat picnic area offers facilities but less dramatic scenery.

Quick answer: Cuckmere Haven beach best for families. Haven Brow summit for incredible views (bring windbreak). Seaford Head sheltered hollow for romantic picnics. Exceat picnic area for convenience and toilet access.

8 Best Picnic Locations

Spot 1: Cuckmere Haven Beach

GPS: 50.7803, 0.1439

FAMILIES

View

Classic meanders + all seven sisters

Shelter

None (fully exposed)

Facilities

10-min walk to Exceat toilets

Why perfect for families: Space for everyone. Kids can run around, play on beach, paddle in river (shallow, safe). Pebble beach activities (skimming stones, building towers). Incredible views keep adults happy while kids explore.

✓ Pros

Tons of space (never feels crowded even peak summer), beach activities, spectacular views, memorable experience for kids, safe area for children to explore.

✗ Cons

Often windy (bring windbreak), no shade (sun exposure), no toilet nearby (10-min walk), can be crowded summer weekends, pebbles uncomfortable to sit on (thick blanket essential).

When we brought a group here: Perfect for groups. Brought extended family here (10 people), spread out blankets, kids played for 2 hours while adults relaxed. Windbreak saved the day (without it, sandwiches would've blown away). Bring rocks to weight blanket corners.

Spot 2: Exceat Picnic Area

Most Facilities

CONVENIENT

What's here: Dedicated picnic area with wooden tables, some tree cover, grassy areas for blankets. Valley views (cliffs in distance, not immediate cliff-edge views). Protected from worst wind by slight valley dip.

Facilities nearby: Toilets 2-minute walk (accessible toilet available), visitor centre, café (backup if weather turns), car park immediately adjacent. This is the "easy option"—arrive, park, picnic 50m from car.

Best for: Older people needing toilet access, families with very young kids, anyone wanting convenience over dramatic views, backup plan if weather uncertain.

⚖️ Trade-offs

Convenience vs drama. You sacrifice spectacular cliff-edge views for practical facilities. Still pleasant (valley is pretty), just less "wow factor" than clifftop spots. Good compromise for mixed groups (some want adventure, some want comfort).

Spot 3: Haven Brow Summit

GPS: 50.7795, 0.1586 • Height: ~77m

BEST VIEWS

The view: 360° panorama including all seven sisters, Cuckmere Valley, Channel to France on clear days, inland South Downs. Genuinely spectacular—this is why you climb to the summit.

⚠️ Wind Warning

This is the windiest spot we've ever picnicked. 30-40mph winds typical, 50mph+ not uncommon. Food WILL blow away without serious precautions. We've had:

  • • Sandwiches blown out of hands (literally)
  • • Blanket airborne despite four people sitting on it
  • • Crisp packet disappeared over cliff edge in seconds

How to make it work: Bring rocks (seriously—weight everything). Use windbreak (essential, not optional). Heavy containers for food (no bags, no loose items). Sit in dip 5-10m back from cliff edge (slightly less wind). Accept you'll battle wind entire time.

Who this works for: Committed picnickers who prioritize views over comfort. Romantic couples (dramatic setting). Photographers wanting spectacular backdrop. NOT suitable for young kids (dangerous cliff edge + wind), elderly (exhausting), or anyone wanting relaxing peaceful meal.

💜 Our Take

Done it three times. Incredible views worth the wind battle twice. Third time wind so strong we gave up after 20 minutes (moved to valley). If weather forecast shows 20mph+ wind, choose different spot.

Spot 4: Seaford Head Sheltered Hollow

Our Secret Spot

ROMANTIC

The location: Natural hollow on Seaford Head clifftop, about 20m back from edge. Dip in ground provides wind protection while maintaining cliff views. Looking east along entire Seven Sisters ridgeline.

How to find it: Climb Seaford Head to summit, continue east 100m along clifftop path, look for slight depression in ground on left (inland side) of path. Not obvious, not signposted—you need to know it's there.

✓ Why It's Special

Protected from wind (hollow blocks worst gusts), still has incredible views, intimate (not obvious picnic spot = usually empty), feels discovered/secret, peaceful, romantic setting.

Best for: Couples, romantic picnics, proposals (yes, we've seen two!), small groups (2-4 people max—space limited), photographers wanting sheltered spot to work from.

Challenges: 45-min steep climb from Seaford to reach it (carry everything), no facilities anywhere nearby, specific location hard to find first time, limited space (works for couples, not families).

💕 Our Secret

This is where we go for special occasions. Climbed up with champagne and cheese for anniversary. Totally private, spectacular views, sheltered enough to actually relax. Haven't told many people about this spot—now we're sharing it with you.

Spot 5: Birling Gap Grassy Area

Location: Grassy area near Birling Gap car park, looking west along cliffs. Natural dip provides some wind protection. Not beach (that's down 83 steps), this is clifftop grass area.

Why choose it: Café 2 minutes away (backup option if weather turns, supplement picnic with coffee/cake), toilets immediately accessible, car park adjacent (easy to carry supplies), views west along cliffs, moderate wind protection.

Best for: Combining café visit with outdoor meal, families wanting facilities nearby, backup weather plan needed, elderly/mobility issues (minimal walking from car).

Downside: Close to car park = less wild feeling, more people around (car park busy summer), some road noise, less dramatic than remote clifftop spots.

Spot 6: Cuckmere Valley Floor (Flat, Easy)

The route: Valley floor paths between Exceat and Cuckmere Haven. Multiple grassy spots along river, all flat, all sheltered by valley walls. Views of cliffs from below (different perspective from clifftop).

✓ Best Shelter

Valley floor = best wind protection of all Seven Sisters picnic spots. Sheltered, calm, peaceful. We've picnicked here on days when clifftop was too windy (30mph+ up top, gentle breeze in valley).

Best for: Elderly (flat walking, no hills, easy access), mobility issues (accessible paths), families with toddlers (safe flat area), anyone prioritizing comfort over dramatic cliff-edge views, windy days when clifftop impossible.

What you sacrifice: Less dramatic views (cliffs distant, not immediate), less "edge of England" feeling, can feel touristy (popular walking route), livestock sometimes present (sheep/cattle).

Spot 7: Hope Gap Beach (Hidden Gem)

The spot: Small beach with natural chalk arch, wave-cut platform. Cliffs provide some wind protection (blocks north wind, south wind still hits). Intimate, beautiful, different from main Cuckmere beach.

Access challenge: Steep descent from clifftop (10 minutes down, 15 minutes back up). Need to carry everything down and back. Only attempt if fit and happy with steep paths.

Best for: Adventurous couples, beach lovers wanting somewhere less crowded, photographers (arch is photogenic), people comfortable with challenging access.

⚠️ Tide Warning

Platform gets cut off at high tide. Check tide times before descending. We once got trapped for 90 minutes waiting for water to recede (embarrassing, uncomfortable with full picnic gear).

Spot 8: Belle Tout Area (Lighthouse Views)

Location: Public coastal path near Belle Tout lighthouse (now private B&B). Views of lighthouse + Seven Sisters extending west. Photo opportunity picnic—lighthouse makes spectacular backdrop.

Important: Stay on public paths only. Lighthouse grounds are private property. Don't trespass for "better views" or "better photos." We've seen people kicked off (awkward, embarrassing, ruins the experience).

Best for: Combining walk from Beachy Head, breaking long walk with scenic lunch stop, lighthouse photography enthusiasts, history buffs (read about lighthouse history while eating).

What to Bring for Seven Sisters Picnics

🎒 Essential Items

  • Windbreak/shelter: Not optional. Wind is serious even calm-looking days. Pop-up windbreak saves picnics.
  • Blanket + pegs/rocks: Wind WILL move unweighted blanket. Bring tent pegs or collect rocks on arrival.
  • Reusable containers: Better than bags in wind. Tupperware with lids = game changer.
  • Water: 1-2L per person. No refills on clifftops (nearest taps at Exceat/Birling Gap).
  • Sun cream: Reflected light from chalk = double exposure. Burn risk high even cloudy days.
  • Layers: Temperature drops in shade/wind. Bring fleece/jacket even summer.

🍎 Food Recommendations

✗ Avoid

  • • Loose items (crisps blow away instantly)
  • • Hot food (goes cold in wind within minutes)
  • • Lightweight packaging (napkins, paper plates = airborne)

✓ Best Options

  • • Sandwiches (substantial, easy to hold)
  • • Wraps (less wind-vulnerable than sandwiches)
  • • Pasties/sausage rolls (stay warm longer)
  • • Hard fruit (apples, pears—not bananas which bruise)
  • • Flapjacks/brownies (travel well)

Our Favorite

Seaford bakery sandwiches + flapjacks + flask of tea. Simple, effective, delicious. Costs £12-15 for two people, saves hassle of making picnic.

🛠️ Useful Equipment

  • Rubbish bag: CRITICAL—carry out everything (no bins on cliffs)
  • Small first aid kit: Plasters, antiseptic wipes, antihistamine
  • Phone: Emergencies + photos + entertainment if kids get bored
  • Camera: Spectacular photo opportunities everywhere
  • Knife: Cutting cheese, spreading butter, opening packages
  • Corkscrew: If bringing wine (we usually do)

❌ What You Can Leave Behind

  • Tons of water: Bring enough but not excessive (heavy to carry). Facilities nearby have taps if desperate.
  • Camp chairs: Nice but not essential (ground works fine, grass comfortable)
  • Multiple changes of clothes: You're picnicking not camping
  • Bulky coolers: Smaller cool bag sufficient (or none if quick picnic)

Weather Contingency Plans

Coastal weather changes fast—sunny to storm in 30 minutes not unusual. Always have backup plan.

If Rain Arrives Mid-Picnic

  • Closest shelter: Birling Gap café (if you're nearby)
  • Exceat visitor centre: 10-min walk from valley spots
  • Hope Gap: No shelter—pack up fast or embrace the rain
  • Car: If parked at Exceat/Birling Gap, retreat to car

If Too Windy

  • Move to valley floor: Immediate wind relief
  • Exceat picnic tables: Some tree shelter
  • Seaford Head hollow: Our secret sheltered spot
  • Indoor option: Birling Gap café, Exceat café

If Too Hot

  • Problem: No shade on cliffs (genuinely dangerous 25°C+ days)
  • Solution: Valley floor (some tree shade), Exceat (tree cover), or abandon clifftops entirely
  • Alternative: Friston Forest walks (woodland shade)

⚠️ When to Abandon & Retreat

We've abandoned picnics three times: Once 40mph+ winds (couldn't stand safely), once heavy rain (soaked within minutes), once extreme heat (32°C, no shade, dangerous). Don't be stubborn—retreat to café/car if conditions genuinely unsafe or miserable.

Rubbish Policy: Leave No Trace

CRITICAL: NO BINS ON CLIFFS

You must carry out EVERYTHING you bring in. No exceptions, no excuses.

What "everything" means: Apple cores, banana peels, orange peel—yes, even organic waste. It's not "natural here" (different ecosystem), attracts gulls (become aggressive), looks awful. Everything goes in your rubbish bag.

This includes: All packaging, food waste, bottles, cans, wrappers, tissues, wet wipes, literally everything. If you brought it in, you carry it out.

✓ Our Observation

95% of people are responsible (carry out rubbish properly). 5% ruin it (leave bottles, wrappers, food waste). Don't be in the 5%. Pack a dedicated rubbish bag, use it, carry it to nearest bin (Exceat/Birling Gap car parks).

Why it matters: Seven Sisters is protected landscape (National Park, conservation area). Litter destroys beauty, harms wildlife, disrespects other visitors. Leave no trace = only footprints left behind.
