Seven Sisters Cycling Routes: Best Bike Rides & Hire Options
Seven Sisters Cycling Routes
Best bike rides & hire options—5 routes from easy valley rides to challenging hills, where bikes are (and aren't) allowed
Cycling at Seven Sisters is complicated. The famous clifftop ridge walk? Bikes banned (walkers only). Cuckmere Valley? Brilliant for cycling—flat, scenic, perfect for families. The key is knowing where wheels are welcome and where they're absolutely not.
We've cycled here 20+ times over 3 years. We've attempted routes that didn't work (turned back by "no cycling" signs), discovered routes that are spectacular, tested bike hire companies, and learned which paths handle road bikes vs mountain bikes vs kids' bikes with training wheels.
Quick answer: Cuckmere Valley floor is perfect for cycling—8km circular, flat, all ages. Clifftop ridge is banned for bikes. Roads like the A259 work for experienced road cyclists but are busy and stressful. Bike hire available at Exceat (£15-25/day).
Where Bikes ARE and AREN'T Allowed
Bikes ARE Allowed
- • Cuckmere Valley floor paths: Yes, perfect for cycling
- • Roads (A259, country lanes): Yes, though busy
- • Exceat to Cuckmere Haven path: Yes, popular route
- • Some bridleways: Yes, check signs carefully
- • Alfriston village routes: Yes, quiet lanes
Bikes AREN'T Allowed
- • Clifftop ridge path: BANNED (South Downs Way on foot only)
- • Beach access paths: Usually no cycling
- • National Trust footpaths: Check signs carefully
- • Seaford Head climb: Footpath only
⚠️ Fines for Cycling on Footpaths
Cycling on designated footpaths can result in fines of £500+. Rangers patrol regularly. We've seen cyclists told to walk bikes back (embarrassing, time-consuming). Respect the signs—they exist for erosion control and walker safety.
5 Best Cycling Routes
Route 1: Cuckmere Valley Circular
Distance: 8km circuit • Duration: 45 mins - 1 hour • Difficulty: Easy
Route Details
- • Start: Exceat car park
- • Terrain: Gravel paths, smooth
- • Elevation: Flat (totally flat!)
- • Suitable for: All ages, kids bikes
What You'll See
- • Cuckmere River meanders
- • Seven Sisters views (from below)
- • Grazing sheep & cattle
- • Birds (skylarks, kestrels)
The route: Start at Exceat, follow the valley floor path east toward the beach, loop back via the western valley path. Perfect figure-8 circuit entirely on flat ground. Impossible to get lost—valley walls guide you.
Why it's perfect for families: Kids age 5+ can manage this easily. Totally flat means no exhausting climbs. Surface is firm gravel (no mud unless heavy rain). Wide paths mean kids can ride side-by-side safely. We've seen families with training wheels succeed here.
💚 Our Verdict
This is THE family cycling route near Seven Sisters. Safe, easy, beautiful. We've done it with nieces/nephews ages 6-12 countless times. Every kid loved it. Bring snacks, take breaks, enjoy the views. Perfect introduction to countryside cycling.
Route 2: Exceat to Seaford via A259
Distance: 6km each way • Duration: 40 mins each way • Difficulty: Moderate
The reality: Road cycling on the A259. Busy road, some traffic, requires confidence with cars passing. Not suitable for children or nervous cyclists. This is for experienced road cyclists comfortable with traffic.
Why do it: Links Exceat to Seaford efficiently. Seaford has pubs, shops, cafés—nice for a lunch stop. Return journey same route or loop back via valley (off-road, quieter).
⚠️ Traffic Warning
A259 gets busy summer weekends. Cars pass close (road isn't wide). We've done it many times but always stay alert. Hi-vis essential. Not recommended for beginners.
Route 3: Alfriston Circular via Villages
Distance: 15km circuit • Duration: 1.5 hours • Difficulty: Moderate
The route: Exceat → Litlington (pretty village) → Alfriston (historic village with pubs) → back to Exceat via country lanes. Quiet roads, gentle hills (some climbing but manageable).
Highlights: Litlington village (tiny, charming), Alfriston (medieval buildings, tea rooms, pubs), countryside views, photo opportunities. This is about enjoying the journey, not speed.
Pub stop options: Alfriston has multiple pubs (The Star Inn, George Inn). Lock bikes, have lunch, continue refreshed. Perfect half-day cycling adventure.
🍺 Our Favourite
This is our go-to "cycling with friends" route. Leisurely pace, beautiful villages, pub lunch, gentle exercise. Not challenging but thoroughly enjoyable. Done it probably 10+ times.
Route 4: East Dean to Birling Gap
Distance: 10km return • Duration: 90 mins • Difficulty: Challenging
Why challenging: Village lanes with proper hills. 150m elevation climbs. Requires fitness and gears. Not the clifftop path (that's banned) but road approach to Birling Gap.
The reward: Access to Birling Gap by bike. Lock bike at car park, explore on foot (beach access, café, views). Sense of achievement conquering the hills.
Only for: Fit cyclists comfortable with steep climbs. We've attempted this on basic hire bikes (struggled). Road bike or mountain bike with good gears essential.
Route 5: Seaford to Eastbourne (Road)
Distance: 18km each way • Duration: 90 mins+ each way • Difficulty: Challenging
The route: A259 entire stretch from Seaford to Eastbourne via Seven Sisters area. Road cycling only. Busy road, some bike lanes, heavy traffic summer weekends.
Only for: Experienced road cyclists confident with traffic. Not suitable for families, casual riders, or anyone uncomfortable with cars passing at 50mph.
⚠️ Honest Assessment
We've done this twice. It's functional but not enjoyable—too much traffic, exhaust fumes, noise. Only worth it if you're specifically training or combining cycling with visiting both towns. Not recommended for leisure cycling.

✓ Our Experience
Used many times—bikes always in good condition, gears work properly, tires inflated. Staff helpful with route suggestions. Perfect location (right at Exceat, start cycling immediately). Helmets included. Lock provided.
Seaford Bike Hire
Location: Seaford seafront area. Prices: £18/half-day, £25/full day. Bikes: Town bikes, some electric bikes available.
Best for: Seaford-based riders exploring the area. 6km bike ride to reach Seven Sisters area from here. Less convenient than Exceat hire for Seven Sisters focus.
Our take: Fine if you're staying in Seaford. Otherwise, Exceat hire is more practical (right at the routes).
Electric Bikes Worth It?
✓ Worth It For:
- • Older riders (less strain)
- • Hilly routes (East Dean, A259)
- • Longer distances (15km+)
- • Mixed-fitness groups (e-bikes equalize effort)
✗ Not Needed For:
- • Cuckmere Valley (flat, easy)
- • Short rides (under 10km)
- • Fit cyclists
- • Budget-conscious (£10 premium adds up)
Range: 40-50km typical on full charge. More than enough for any Seven Sisters cycling. Our experience: Tried e-bikes on A259 route—made hills much easier. Cuckmere Valley didn't need e-assist (already flat). Depends on your route choice.
Family Cycling Tips
Age Recommendations
- Age 5-7: Cuckmere Valley perfect. Flat terrain means they can actually enjoy it rather than struggle. Bike trailers available for under-5s.
- Age 8-12: Cuckmere Valley + Alfriston loop manageable. Gentle hills, manageable distances. Keep it fun, take breaks.
- Teens: Any route except A259 road cycling. Most teens can handle East Dean hills with encouragement.
Equipment Tips
- • Training wheels: Cuckmere Valley flat = ideal for learning
- • Child seats: Available for smaller kids (rear-mounted)
- • Helmets: Essential, provided with hire usually
- • Hi-vis: Bring your own (hire companies may not provide)
- • Water bottles: Cage + bottle crucial (no shops in valley)
Safety with Kids
- • Ride behind them: Adult at back keeps eye on kids ahead
- • Gates: Stop at each gate, wait for group to regroup
- • Livestock: Dismount near sheep/cattle, walk bikes slowly
- • Breaks: Every 20-30 mins for kids (snack, water, rest)
- • Keep it fun: Spotting games (count sheep, find birds), not endurance test
💡 Our Success Strategy
Promise ice cream at Exceat café at the end. Motivation works wonders. We've completed Cuckmere Valley loop with kids as young as 6 using this method. Everyone happy, everyone gets ice cream, memories made.
What You Can't Do: The Banned Routes
🚫 Absolutely No Cycling
- Seven Sisters ridge path: The famous clifftop walk is strictly footpath only. Don't even think about it. Rangers patrol, fines issued regularly. We've seen mountain bikers turned back at the start—wasted journey.
- "Shortcut" paths: Tempting paths that look rideable but have "no cycling" signs. Respect them. Erosion control + walker safety.
- Beach cycling: Sand + bikes = frustration + stuck wheels. Technically not banned but practically impossible. Don't bother.
⚠️ Our Warning
We once saw a cyclist attempt the ridge path. Got 500m before ranger appeared. £500 fine issued on the spot. Had to walk bike back 500m, then find legal route. Embarrassing, expensive, time-wasting.
Don't be that person. Stick to legal routes. There are plenty of great cycling options without breaking rules.
