Seven Sisters Camping & Glamping Guide: Best Sites Near the Cliffs
Seven Sisters Camping & Glamping Guide
Best campsites & glamping near the cliffs—10 sites within 10km, prices £15-60/night, what we've learned from 3+ years camping here
Camping near Seven Sisters lets you catch sunrise from Cuckmere Haven without a 4am drive, explore at your own pace, and properly experience the South Downs beyond a day trip. But there's no campsite AT the cliffs themselves—you need to choose from surrounding areas, each with different advantages.
We've stayed at several of these sites first-hand, ranging from basic £15/night pitches to luxury £120/night yurts. We've learned which locations work for walkers vs families, where advance booking is essential, what facilities actually matter. This is everything we know.
Quick answer: Alfriston Camping Park best for access to cliffs (8km away, bus connections). Cuckmere Valley Pods closest (2km from Exceat) but limited availability. For glamping luxury, Hidden Spring Vineyard Yurts wins every time.
Traditional Campsites
Alfriston Camping Park
Distance: 8km from Birling Gap • Price: £22-28/night
Facilities
- • Clean showers & toilets
- • Washing up area
- • Electric hookups available
- • Basic shop on site
Key Info
- • Bus 12 nearby (to cliffs)
- • Village amenities 10 mins walk
- • Advance booking essential summer
- • Dogs welcome
Why we recommend it: Best balance of proximity to Seven Sisters and proper facilities. Alfriston village (10-minute walk) has pubs, shops, and that lovely village atmosphere, with the Cuckmere valley and the cliffs at Exceat a short drive or walk away.
✓ Pros
Close proximity to cliffs, clean facilities, friendly owners (we've chatted with them many times), village nearby for supplies/pubs, good shower pressure (genuinely matters after a long walk).
✗ Cons
Busy in summer (can feel crowded), road noise from A27 (slight), advance booking essential July-August (turned away twice without booking), slightly pricier than basic sites.
From two stays here, spring and summer: Spring was quiet and lovely. Summer was full but still well-managed. Showers were always clean (visited 7am and 10pm). Book online at alfriston-camping.co.uk minimum 2 weeks ahead for summer weekends.
Bay View Park (Pevensey Bay)
Distance: 12km from Seven Sisters • Price: £18-25/night
Facilities: Full facilities including laundrette, small shop, showers/toilets, electric hookups, some static caravans also on site. Larger commercial site feel compared to Alfriston's intimate setup.
Best for: Longer stays (3+ nights), families wanting beach access as well as cliffs, budget-conscious campers (£18 midweek is excellent value), touring base for wider area.
The distance reality: 12km means 20-minute drive to Seven Sisters. You'll be driving to the cliffs daily rather than using buses. Fine if you have a car, frustrating if you hoped to be car-free after arrival.
What we liked: Sea views from some pitches, peaceful evening atmosphere, laundrette (did 3 loads after muddy week), good for families (play area keeps kids happy).
Normans Bay Camping
Distance: 15km from Seven Sisters • Price: £20-30/night
The appeal: Beach camping feel—you're right by the sea. Shingle beach access directly from site. Different vibe from inland campsites, more coastal and breezy.
Facilities: Beach access, showers, toilets, electric hookups available. Basic but adequate. More relaxed management than commercial sites.
Distance challenge: 15km from Seven Sisters requires car. This is better as a beach camping base with day trip to cliffs, rather than dedicated Seven Sisters camping.
Our take: Lovely for a beach/cliffs combination holiday. Too far if Seven Sisters is your primary focus. Peaceful, uncrowded, good for relaxation.
Seaford Camping
Distance: 3km from Seaford Head • Price: £15-20/night
Small site, basic facilities: Toilets and showers basic but clean. Limited pitches (maybe 20 tents max). Very simple setup. No shop, no electric usually.
Why walkers love it: You can literally walk from your tent to Seaford Head clifftop in 45 minutes. Wake up, have breakfast, walk straight onto the Seaford to Seven Sisters route. No driving required.
💡 Our Tip
Book early. Site fills quickly summer weekends despite basic facilities—location trumps luxury for serious walkers. We've seen it fully booked by April for July weekends.
Budget-friendly: £15/night is cheapest you'll find near Seven Sisters. Perfect if you're happy with basic and just need somewhere to sleep between walks.
Glamping Options
Glamping = camping without the discomfort. Proper beds, heating, often cooking facilities. Significantly pricier (£60-180/night) but transforms the experience from "endurance test" to "actually relaxing countryside escape." Worth it for special occasions, couples, or if you dislike sleeping on the ground.
Hidden Spring Vineyard Yurts
Distance: 10km from Seven Sisters • Price: £120-180/night
Accommodation
- • Mongolian yurts (sleeps 4-5)
- • Proper beds with duvets
- • Wood burner (cosy!)
- • Outdoor kitchen area
Setting
- • Working vineyard location
- • Wine tasting available
- • Peaceful countryside views
- • Minimum 2-night stay weekends
The experience: This is glamping done properly. The yurts are beautiful—canvas walls, wooden floors, actual furniture, bedding that smells fresh not musty. Wood burner keeps it warm (we visited October, stayed toasty). Outdoor kitchen has everything you need. Vineyard setting is genuinely special.
Why expensive: You're paying for the luxury, the unique experience, the vineyard setting, the quality of everything. Anniversary, special occasion, romantic getaway—this is the place. Regular camping it's not.
❤️ The night we stayed here
Stayed for our anniversary. Completely worth it. Woke up, had breakfast in the vineyard, drove to Seven Sisters for day walk, returned to comfortable bed and wine tasting. Perfect weekend. Book 2-3 months ahead—very popular.
Blackberry Wood Campsite
Distance: 25km (worth the drive) • Price: £45-95/night
Accommodation options: Woodland camping pitches, pre-erected bell tents, wooden cabins (varying comfort levels). Quirky themed areas throughout—treehouse zones, fairy doors, adventure playground structures.
Why families love it: Kids are entertained for hours without screens. Play structures built into woods, rope swings, exploration areas. Parents get to relax (actual relaxation, not "watching kids every second"). Different vibe from typical campsites.
Distance trade-off: 25km from Seven Sisters is significant. 35-minute drive. This works as a multi-purpose base—day trip to cliffs, day at site enjoying facilities, day exploring other areas. Not ideal if you only want Seven Sisters access.
Our verdict: Best family glamping near the area (loosely defined "near"). Kids loved it—wanted to stay longer. If you're camping with children under 10, the extra driving is worth the happy kids. Book months ahead—incredibly popular with families.
Beech Estate Campsite (Shepherd's Huts)
Distance: 12km • Price: £80-120/night
Luxury shepherd's huts: Traditional design, modern comfort. Proper beds, heating, small kitchenette in some, ensuite shower/toilet in premium huts. Compact but cleverly designed—everything you need, nothing wasted.
Setting: Countryside estate, peaceful fields, views across South Downs. More private than yurts—each hut has its own space. Wood-fired hot tub available (book separately, extra £40).
Book months ahead: Seriously—these fill up 4-6 months in advance for summer. Incredibly popular for couples, honeymoons, romantic getaways. We tried booking 6 weeks ahead in June, nothing available until September.
Best for: Couples wanting comfort, privacy, and countryside experience. Less suitable for families with young kids (huts are small, not much outdoor play space).
Cuckmere Valley Pods (NEW 2025)
Distance: 2km from Exceat! • Price: £60-85/night
The game-changer: These opened 2025 and solved the "no accommodation near Seven Sisters" problem. 2km from Exceat means you're basically at the cliffs. Walk from your pod to Cuckmere Haven in 25 minutes. This is what walkers have been waiting for.
Accommodation: Insulated camping pods (wooden structures). Heating, lighting, lockable door, some power points. Bring sleeping bags/bedding. Nearby facilities block has showers/toilets (shared, not ensuite).
🏆 Perfect for Walkers
Wake up, walk to cliffs for sunrise (30 mins), back for breakfast, out for full day walk, return to comfortable pod. No driving between accommodation and cliffs. This is the setup we've always wanted.
Cons: No ensuite (shared facilities 50m walk), not luxury (pods are basic), limited availability (only 6 pods total). Book as far ahead as possible—these fill immediately.
Our take: Haven't stayed yet (too new, fully booked when we tried) but location is incredible for walkers. Will definitely try next season. Price is reasonable for the proximity.
Wild Camping: Don't Do It
Wild Camping is NOT Permitted
National Trust land, strictly enforced. Rangers patrol regularly, especially summer evenings. Fines of £500+ if caught.
Why It's Enforced:
- • Erosion: Trampling fragile chalk grassland
- • Fire risk: Dry grass + camp stoves = danger
- • Conservation: Protected wildlife habitats
- • Human waste: No facilities = environmental damage
We've seen it attempted: Campers arriving at dusk, setting up near Seaford Head. Rangers appear within 2 hours. Polite but firm—you're leaving. They're serious about enforcement.
Nearest legal wild camping: Some designated areas in South Downs National Park exist, but not at Seven Sisters specifically. Research "wild camping South Downs regulations" if interested—rules are complex and location-specific.
💡 Our Advice
Don't risk it. Campsites are affordable (£15-30/night for most), legal, have facilities, and let you relax without watching for rangers. The £15 campsite fee is worth the peace of mind.

- • Book 2-3 months ahead minimum
- • Bank holidays: 6 months ahead
- • Popular sites fill first (Alfriston, Cuckmere Pods)
- • Weekends harder than midweek
- • Glamping sites book faster than basic camping
Off-Peak (Apr-May, Sep-Oct)
- • 2-4 weeks ahead usually sufficient
- • Better weather than you'd expect
- • Quieter sites, more peaceful
- • Some glamping sites 20-30% cheaper
- • Last-minute availability more common
Last-Minute Options
- • Try Seaford basic sites (often have space)
- • Bay View Park (larger, more pitches)
- • Midweek always easier than weekends
- • Phone sites directly (online may show full)
- • Cancellations happen—worth calling day before
Cost-Saving Tips
- • Midweek 20-30% cheaper than weekends
- • Longer stays: Some sites offer 4-night price for 5
- • Basic sites (£15) vs glamping (£120) = huge saving
- • Cook own food (pub meals add up fast)
- • Free parking if camping (vs up to £8 at Birling Gap)
⚠️ What going without a booking cost us
Turned away twice at peak times without booking. Drove around for 2 hours looking for space (found nothing). Eventually paid £130 for last-minute B&B. Learn from our mistakes—book ahead.
What to Bring for Camping
Beyond standard camping gear (tent, sleeping bag, mat), Seven Sisters camping has specific requirements based on coastal weather and remote location.
Essential Extras
- • Extra layers: Coastal nights are cold, even summer (10-12°C common)
- • Wind-proof tent pegs: Sussex wind is serious. Standard pegs won't hold.
- • Waterproofs: Weather changes fast—sunny to storm in 30 mins
- • Headtorch: Essential for sunset walks back to site
- • Cash: Some sites are cash-only (no card machines)
- • Mallet: Chalk ground is hard—need proper tent peg mallet
What You Can Leave Behind
- • Tons of water: All sites have taps (refill as needed)
- • Heavy cookware: Most sites have washing up facilities
- • Camp chairs: Nice but not essential (ground works fine)
- • Multiple changes of clothes: You'll wear same walking gear daily
- • Bulky food: Shops in Seaford/Alfriston nearby
💡 Our Packing List Essentials
After 3 years camping here, we've refined our packing to: tent + sleeping setup, cooking basics, clothes for 2 days (rotate/wash), waterproofs, warm jacket, headtorch, good boots, water bottle, snacks, first aid, and entertainment for evenings (book/cards).
Everything else is luxury or "might need" items that we never actually need.
Multi-Day Itinerary Ideas
3-Day Camping Trip
Day 1: Arrival & Gentle Start
Arrive midday, set up camp, settle in. Afternoon: Easy Cuckmere Valley walk (flat, 90 mins). Evening: Pub dinner in Alfriston, early night (ready for proper walking tomorrow).
Day 2: Full Ridge Walk
Early breakfast (8am), drive to Seaford or Exceat. Complete full Seven Sisters ridge walk (6-8 hours). Return to campsite exhausted but satisfied. Cook at campsite, collapse.
Day 3: Birling Gap Beach & Pack Up
Leisurely morning. Visit Birling Gap beach, explore rock pools, café lunch. Pack up camp afternoon, head home by 4pm.
4-Day Trip (Our Favourite)
Same as 3-day but add: Day 3 becomes Beachy Head walk from the eastern approach (different section), or rest day (read, relax, short valley walks only). Day 4 becomes Birling Gap + pack up. Extra day makes huge difference to stress levels.
Week-Long Base Camp
For serious walkers or families wanting proper immersion. Base at one campsite, explore different routes daily. Includes: Multiple cliff walks, valley walks, beach days, pub visits, rest days. We've done this once—incredible but needs fitness and planning.
